Everything is in the hands of the Creator. The only thing that exists is the light that is emanating from Him, and we either experience His light as good or bad in life. When we experience darkness it means, that we perceive the Creator only from His backside. This means, that we believe, that there's an upper force in existence, but we don't see, that it would bring us good and benevolence. Rather we perceive ourselves as slaves in life — slaves from outer circumstances, from our jobs, families, politics or whatever.
The Jewish oral tradition tells us, that in the days of the slavery in Egypt, that the tribe of Levi was completely liberated from all the deeds of bondage. One would ask why this was so. The tribe of Levi was busy with exploring the essence of all things, which is the essence of the word of God. From a logical perspective they should have been enslaved then more than the other Israelites, because they invested their time into all that was absolutely contrary for what Egypt was standing for. But the puzzling fact is, that the Egyptians didn't enslave them, because someone who strives after the essential things in life, which are the words of God, cannot be enslaved by anyone.
In reality only the light force is existent. When we are able to receive the light we experience it as all that is good and beneficial for us. We experience a great sense of freedom. When we don't receive the light at the moment, we feel the pressure from outside, which means, that the surrounding light is setting pressure on us through all kinds of external events, might they be financial, through problems in the job, health, or whatever.
We should constantly yearn for the secrets of life itself, because those secrets want to be found. And when we're not yearning for them, the backside of the Creator will put pressure on us. That's why it's written, come to Pharaoh, and not go to Pharaoh, because Pharaoh is also God in concealment. And so we must come to a sensation, that everything we face in life comes from the upper source. But we have the choice to select the path of joy with the least pain and sufferings, which is the path of Torah, which was given to the whole of humanity to lift itself up from the place of bondage and suffering.
