A Fundamental Different Understanding of God

We must come to understand that Kabbalah has a very different conception of God than most religions. We're trained to believe that God would sit on a throne to judge people and the world in a voluntary manner. And then religious people begin to wonder why good people have so many difficulties but why the evil ones have much success.

According to Kabbalah, there's only the upper force, which is infinite light. This light contains all pleasures we could imagine or not imagine yet. The physical light of the sun, for example, is only a manifestation of the light from the upper world. The upper world exists above the speed of light; our world exists below it.

According to the view of Kabbalist Rav Yehuda Ashlag we ourselves have brought us down into this dark universe to ignite the light on our own. God's light may be concealed, but it is our part to reveal it in this physical world.

Prayer, so to speak, is not to pray to a personal God to give us comfort and all the good we desire, but prayer is an intention to ask the upper force to correct our vessel. Only a corrected vessel is ready to receive the pleasure of the upper worlds. The greater the desire, the greater the joy we're able to receive.

To ignite the light, the upper force has given us the Torah to correct ourselves. Instead of viewing ourselves always as a passive play ball of the will of destiny or a personal God sitting around anywhere, we must see life as a chance to learn and to evolve. Because the more we learn to be a person of sharing, the more things will work out in our favor. And the things we lack are a hint that something in this place must be corrected. Sharing and freedom are one and the same. If we acquire the property of bestowal, we will become a true master of our destiny, and life will feel like the greatest joy and freedom we could imagine instead of being a random succession of events we can't control.
